1.0  BRAND – TEN ELEVEN NINE

1.01 Why TEN ELEVEN NINE?

Actually the zip code 10119 of Berlin Mitte (location of our studio) inspired us to create our brand name.
Whereby the geographical aspect has not the first priority, but rather Berlin as an idea in a figurative sense. As an attitude towards life for tolerance, cosmopolitanism, creativity and respectful coexistence of different life plans.
Another aspect is that TEN ELEVEN NINE plays with the non-linearity and infinity of the subjective perception of time. Some days feel like one step forward and two steps back, whereas on other days the time “flies” from 11.00 in the morning to 9.00 in the evening, such as one hour from 10.00 to 11.00.
But no matter what happens, after 10, 11, at some point the 9 will always come.

1.02 Who runs TEN ELEVEN NINE?

TEN ELEVEN NINE was founded in 2019 in Berlin by photographer + creative director Leif Henrik Osthoff.
Leif moved from Bochum to Torstrasse 99 in 10119 Berlin in 1999.
After working in Düsseldorf and Cologne, he returned to Torstrasse in 2009.
This time together with Sonja Gutschera, both of whom work internationally as a photographer duo in the fields of beauty and still life.

1.03 How is the TEN ELEVEN NINE UG (haftungsbeschränkt) structured?

TEN ELEVEN NINE UG (limited liability) is an owner-managed company based in 10119 Berlin.

1.04 What is the position of TEN ELEVEN NINE?

We stand against racism, for tolerance, cosmopolitanism, communication, empathy, pacifism, solidarity, tolerance, diversity, creativity and respectful coexistence of different life plans……. and for TRUTH BEAUTY LOVE

1.05 Why, TRUTH, BEAUTY, LOVE?

We believe in TRUTH, even sometimes it feels rather inconvenient yet very subjective. For the BEAUTY in a direct and obvious, as well as in a hidden and figurative sense, also consisting of those little fractions, unconventional „edges and corners“. For the LOVE even being laboriously unromantic sometimes yet again very easy.

3.0 WATCHES – RESEARCHER, MINIMAL, WELTWEIT

3.01 Why a mechanical watch?

We love mechanical watches.
For us, mechanical watches occupy a lot of charm and charisma, not only because of the more evenly running hands.
The combination of tools and jewelry, talismans and memento mori is what we are fond of.
Another important aspect is that mechanical watches are one of the few current products having a very long product life cycle with regular maintenance, hence being very sustainable.

3.02 Why Berlin?

For more than 20 years Berlin Mitte (zip code 10119) has been our professional and private center of life. This is where the ideas, the design are created and the quality check of the watches is carried out.

3.03 Why Glashütte?

Glashütte, as a well-established, internationally valued watchmaking town with tradition, was our first choice when looking for a very good case manufacturer. Fortunately, we were able to convince our preferred manufacturer of our project. In Glashütte, the housing was designed accordingly to our specifications and the first prototypes were produced.

3.04 Why is the watch called "MINIMAL"?

Minimal as a life plan, yet as well as an aesthetic concept - a focus on the essential, the fundamental/basic.

3.05 Why is the watch called "RESEARCHER"?

We love exploring, whether online or offline. Driven by curiosity and interest. What will be found behind the next corner: We want to know.

TEN ELEVEN NINE

3.06 Why is the watch called "WELTWEIT"?

As far as we are concerned everything is connected WORLDWIDE (means in german WELTWEIT). It is worthwhile to tackle the tasks of the future together.

3.07 Why the name KING SIZE?

In the 50s and 60s, typical men's watches were 32-35mm in diameter. At that time, a 38mm watch was called jumbo size or king size.

3.08 Where are the individual parts of the watch produced?

Watch case: Glashütte (Germany)
Movement: La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland)
Dial: Lörrach (Germany)
Hands: Morteau (France)
Straps + Bracelet: Worldwide
Montage + Regulation: Germany

3.09 Why 38mm watch diameter?

For us, 38mm x 47mm x 11mm are the perfect dimensions for an elegant three-hand watch.

3.10 Why a Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement?

We opted for the tried and tested Swiss Sellita SW200-1 Premium (TOP regulation) automatic movement, as it is, just like the almost identical Eta 2824 movement.  A very robust, durable and reliable movement which can also be serviced and repaired almost everywhere at low cost and thus carries the idea of a long-lasting product.

3.11 Why 200 meters of water resistance?

We love water, therefore wanted to create an elegant watch, which - thanks to its robustness and water resistance - can handle all situations in everyday life, even when things get sportier.

TEN ELEVEN NINE - WATCHES - MADE IN GERMANY

3.12 Why this watch case shape?

When designing the watch case, it‘s timeless nature was very important to us. which is why we went for a classic, elegant and robust case with a harmonious balance between elegance and sportiness.

3.13 Why satinated and polished?

We love the reflection behavior and the contrast of polished metal surfaces (bezel + sides of the case) next to brushed surfaces (lugs + caseback of the watch). (Model RESEARCHER and MINIMAL)

3.14 Why is the "WELTWEIT" case completely satined?

In our point of view, a completely brushed metal case goes best with the striking worldwide dial, as it underlines the tool character of this watch.

3.15 Why sapphire glass?

Sapphire glass is very robust, scratch-resistant and of high quality.

3.16 Why glass with an anti-reflective coating on the  inside

After some tests, we decided on the version with an anti-reflective glass on the inside.
Solely in our opinion, it is much more robust in comparison to an anti-reflective coating on the outside. Furthermore, we really like the independent look and the reflection behavior of one-sided anti-reflective coating.

3.17 Why slightly curved glass?

A slightly curved glass supports the harmony of the housing and creates a very slight distortion when you look at it from a  side angle. Which gives the dial more liveliness.

3.18 Why no viewing window in the rear cover?

We have deliberately omitted a viewing window in the back cover. It supports the minimal and robust character of the watch and creates a very nice space for personal engravings.

3.19 Why a semi-matt, grey-blue dial?

The dark grey, slightly cold Pantone colour of the dial emphasizes the elegance and timeless sportiness of the watch in an excellent way. Depending on the incident light angles, the colour changes a little, which gives it a wonderful changing look.

3.20 Why the AVANT GARDE font?

For us, Herb Lubalin's Avant Garde font family is known for the openness and playfulness of the 1970s, but also for something absolutely timeless and headstrong.

3.21 Why the colours white and grey on the dial?

The use white and grey achieves a very nice depth graduation thus give the dial a bit of spatiality visually.

3.22 Why this hand shape and why white hands?

We are big fans of the dress and tool watches of the 50s and 60s. The shape of the Dauphine hands remind us of the 50s and 60s dress watches. The white colour of the hands is a reminiscence of the great legibility of the white hands of the toolwatches from the same time period.

3.23 Why "drilled" lugs?

Drilled lugs are incredibly useful when changing the strap, and they underline the practical use of an elegant tool watch.

3.24 Why are there no leather bracelets?

It is important to us that no animal is harmed during the production of the watch, which is why we do not offer leather bracelets.

3.25 Why "TRUTH BEAUTY LOVE" on the caseback?

That's what we stand for, "TRUTH, BEAUTY, LOVE". But if you like it more clean and minimal, easy, it's an option....... we highly recommend the first option, of course......:-)
